Massive Gas Leak Triggers Fire at ONGC Well in Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema; No Casualties Reported

The incident occurred at the Mori-5 well located near Mori village. The well is operated by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) through its production enhancement contractor Deep Industries Ltd.
Cause of the Fire
According to ONGC officials, the blaze was caused by a gas pipeline leakage during ongoing production enhancement operations at the Mori-5 well. The leak reportedly led to a loud explosion followed by a fire at the site.
“The fire occurred due to a gas pipeline leakage at the Mori-5 well, which is operated by Deep Industries Ltd as part of production enhancement operations,” an ONGC official told PTI.
Emergency Response and Safety Measures
Senior ONGC officials from Rajahmundry rushed to the site soon after the incident was reported. Fire department and police personnel were also deployed to control the blaze and secure the area.
Balakrishna, a fire department officer, told ANI that a significant gas leak was reported in Irusumanda village of Malkipuram mandal, following which emergency services were alerted. Firefighting teams are currently engaged in cooling and containment operations.
The Konaseema district administration has also reached the site and is coordinating safety measures to prevent any escalation of the situation.
ONGC’s Official Statement
In an official statement, ONGC said, “The incident of gas leak during workover operations at Well Mori #5 was reported by the PEC Operator Deep Industries Limited for the Mori Field in Andhra Pradesh on 5 January 2026. The well is located in a remote area with no human habitation within a radius of approximately 500–600 metres. No injury or loss of life has been reported.”
NGC personnel rushed to the scene to control the leak and contain the fire. Authorities have since cordoned off the area and are closely monitoring developments, while emergency measures are being taken to ensure public safety.Senior district officials and ONGC officials are currently at the spot monitoring the situation.
ONGC has a strong presence in the Krishna Godavari delta basin in East Godavari district and the surrounding regions of Andhra Pradesh.
ONGC operates through its Rajahmundry Onshore Asset and Eastern Offshore Asset in the state, producing natural gas, crude oil and associated hydrocarbons from multiple offshore rigs in the Bay of Bengal and onshore fields in East Godavari.
ONGC added that the surrounding area has been secured and cooling operations have begun. The company has deployed its Crisis Management Teams and is preparing for well-control measures, including possible capping of the well, if required.
About the Operator
Deep Industries Ltd, a Production Enhancement Contractor (PEC) for ONGC, secured a ₹1,402-crore contract in 2024 for production enhancement operations at ONGC’s Rajahmundry Asset in Andhra Pradesh. The company has been operating the Mori-5 well for about a year.
Situation Under Control
Officials stated that the situation is currently under control, and detailed investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the gas leak. Villagers, who initially panicked after witnessing the fire, have been reassured by authorities.
